Southern Excellence Awards

Nominations for the Southern Excellence Awards are now open. 

The Awards recognise and acknowledge our amazing staff and the important roles they play in providing care and support across our health system. If you have a team or a colleague you would like to celebrate - pick from our nine awesome categories and nominate them for a Southern Excellence Award today!

Finalists will be invited to an awards evening in March 2022, where the winners of each category will be revealed.

Categories

The award categories recognise the diverse ways in which excellence is reflected across Southern DHB.

Graham Crombie Outstanding Leadership Award

Paying homage to the late Deputy Commissioner Graham Crombie - an exceptional individual and leader who made a phenomenal contribution the DHB - this award recognises an individual or team who demonstrate outstanding leadership, including mentoring, supporting and enabling the development of people and services – inspiring and motivating others to be the best they can be.

Excellence in Health and Safety Award

This award celebrates the commitment and dedication of an individual or team who has contributed to making Southern DHB a safer place to work through finding and implementing innovative ways to improve work practice, engagement and participation. 

Team of the Year Award

This award is for a team that has demonstrated their ability to deliver clear benefits through working together effectively and efficiently. The definition of a team, in this context, is two or more members of DHB staff sharing the same goals, in either their day-to-day work or on a particular project or task.


Outstanding Care and Compassion Award

This award is for an individual or team who goes the extra mile to ensure their service is caring and compassionate, and makes a difference to the lives of patients, service users and/or carers.

Behind the Scenes (Unsung Hero) Award

This award recognises an individual or team within corporate and support services (Human Resources, Finance, Building and Property, IT, Strategy etc.), who consistently go above and beyond the call of duty in their day-to-day work to support the core and front-line services of the DHB.

Please note: This award is not open to those who provide front-line care.

Rising Star Award

This award recognises the achievements of an individual who has been in their role less than two years, who goes above and beyond to help the DHB deliver its objectives and strives to exceed in all that they do. This individual will show an exceptional level of skill, initiative and commitment to their role.

Māori Health Development Award

This award recognises the achievements of any Southern DHB individual or team who have made a real contribution to improving the outcomes of Māori health and wellbeing.

Southern Health Values Champion Award

This award is for an individual or team who have incorporated the core Southern DHB values and behaviours into their everyday work environment.

Southern Innovation Challenge Award

This award is for an individual or team who are currently working on introducing a new device, method or material to improve our health services for patients and staff.


Timeline

  • Nominations open Monday 1 November 2021. 
  • Nominations close Friday 14 January 2022 at midnight. 
  • A panel of internal and external experts will assess the nominations and notify the finalists via email.  
  • Winners will be revealed at the awards evening in March 2022. 
Entry rules
  • The Southern Excellence Awards are open to all employees and volunteers of Southern DHB
  • The work or examples referenced must have been undertaken at least part in the past year (September 2020 to September 2021)
  • Entries must be submitted no later than midnight on Friday 14 January 2022. Nominations received after this time will not be considered, nor can accepted entries be amended
  • Individuals or teams cannot nominate either themselves or family members
  • An individual or team may be nominated for more than one category, provided a separate nomination form is completed for each category
  • Information provided in any application will be held by Southern DHB for the purpose of assessing the applications and promoting the Awards. In submitting an application, applicants consent to the publication of some or all of the information contained within their application
  • All finalists and winners will be photographed for publicity purposes before and during the awards.


The judging process

Applications will be assessed by a panel of internal and external experts using set criteria. The shortlisted applicants will be notified via email in early 2022, and the winners will be announced at the Southern Excellence Awards evening held in March 2022.
