B4 School Check

The before school check is a nationwide programme offering a free health and development check for 4-year-olds.

The aim of these checks is to identify any health, behavioural, developmental or social concerns which could affect the child's ability to get the most out of schools such as difficulties with communication or hearing problem.

How does my child get a B4 School Check?
Once your child turns 4 your local B4 School Check team will contact you and invite you to have a B4 School Check.

The B4 School check usually takes about 45-60 minutes. It includes:

  • Child health questionnaire

  • Hearing and vision screening

  • Developmental/behavioural screening

  • Measurement of height and weight

  • Health promotion and education

  • Oral health assessment

  • Immunisation (if overdue) where possible
