Stroke Aotearoa NZ

On this page

Every year, it’s estimated over 9,000 strokes and an unknown number of transient ischaemic attacks happen in New Zealand. It is the second leading cause of death in New Zealand, and a leading cause of adult disability. Stroke Aotearoa New Zealand is here to lead the fight against stroke. Te Ahi Tūmanako, the flame of hope, connects us and symbolises taking action and advocating for others, ensuring that hope remains alive and thriving in our communities.

We seek to inspire, unify, and mobilise collective action against stroke. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier, Aotearoa.

    Services Provided

    Stroke Support

We support stroke survivors and people affected by stroke to manage the impact of stroke on their lives.

Our Community Stroke Navigators (Kaiārahi) work across Aotearoa, providing information and guidance to help people prevent stroke and navigate the complex health and disability system. They develop partnerships and deliver stroke education programmes in communities. They provide individual advocacy support and deliver face-to-face support when needed to people and their whānau affected by stroke.

We have a free helpline, 0800 STROKE (0800 78 76 53), where people affected by stroke, including people who support the stroke affected community, can access support and guidance. Callers are connected to a Community Stroke Navigator who has the knowledge and experience to answer questions about stroke and the health and disability system. No referrals necessary: anyone can call this helpline, including whānau, caregivers, community workers, and health professionals.

Our Return to Work Advisors assist stroke survivors with employment and work-related advice and support, designed to help stroke survivors re-enter the workforce. This service is free and can be used by stroke survivors all over Aotearoa who meet the eligibility criteria set by the Ministry of Social Development.

We offer a range of life after stroke workshops, presentations and education sessions for people affected by stroke. We also offer free blood pressure and pulse checks in communities throughout Aotearoa, helping thousands of people every year to better understand and manage their risk of stroke. You can find the latest events on our website.

    Family / whānau support
Stroke Aotearoa has online resources and videos that answer young people’s questions about life after stroke.

We also have resources available on our website for caregivers.

If you are affected by a loved one's stroke, you can call our free helpline, 0800 STROKE, for support and guidance.
    Information, education & support
We have a comprehensive range of resources available on our website, available in different languages. You can also call our free helpline, 0800 STROKE, for information about stroke or for support and guidance.
