Ophthalmology - Southland | Southern
Description
Ophthalmology (Eye Department) focuses on the health of eyes and surrounding tissues, including muscles, bones and eyelids. Common eye conditions are:
- Cataracts
- Squints
- Glaucoma
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Retinal Detachment
- Age Related Macular Degeneration.
You will be seen at our Outpatients Department by an Eye Consultant or Nurse Specialist following referral to the hospital by your GP or Optometrist.
As part of the examination you may have drops in your eyes. The drops may cause blurred vision and light sensitivity.
Ophthalmologists are doctors who are trained in the study of eyes. Most will be trained in eye surgery, and may have particular areas of interest or expertise.
Optometrists are not doctors but are trained in testing your vision to assess your need for glasses or contact lenses. Some also test for glaucoma.
