Mental Health Emergency Services | Southern

    The Southern DHB Mental Health Emergency Services are delivered by the Southland Mental Health Emergency Team (SMHET) based at Southland Hospital and the Emergency Psychiatric Service based at Dunedin Hospital. Dunedin Hospital also provide a Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Service.

    Programme

    Southland Mental Health Emergency Team (SMHET)

    The Southland Mental Health Emergency Team (SMHET) provides a 24 hour/7 day week service for people who need crisis mental health (emergency) treatment, assistance and information about The Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act.

     

     

    Emergency Psychiatric Service

    The Emergency Psychiatric Service is a mobile 24-hour, 7-day a week service providing emergency services to people with acute mental health needs. 

     

    Psychiatric Consultation Liaison

    The Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Service is dedicated to assist Dunedin Hospital non-psychiatric staff in the management of general hospital patients (medical, surgical or obstetric) who also have concurrent psychiatric, behavioural or interpersonal problems.

     

    Charges

    There are no fees for services to public patients if you are lawfully in New Zealand and meet one of the eligibility criteria set by the Ministry of Health. If you do not meet the criteria, you will be required to pay for the full cost of any medical treatment you recieve during your stay.
