The Southern DHB’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Nigel Millar is reassuring members of the public that Southern hospitals have policies and protective measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Dr Millar’s reassurance comes while New Zealand is at Alert Level Two, and members of the public have different concerns around the spread of infection, and different expectations of what they will see when visiting a hospital.

Hospital staff had been approached by some people who were genuinely distressed that all hospital visitors and workers were not wearing masks.  Dr Millar said he appreciated their concerns, and wanted to reassure people that appropriate precautions are in place.

“We are committed to the national response for preventing COVID-19 spread and we are following the same principles. However, it may appear different to that which you would expect and to what has been happening previously at Alert Level 3 in other parts of the country.  In Southern we remain at Alert Level 2, where COVID-19 is contained and currently we have no cases or community transmission.

Dr Millar said while there was currently no requirement for visitors and staff to routinely wear masks or face coverings, it was up to individual choice, and people who wanted to wear a mask or face covering were welcome to do so.

“When our staff are providing direct care for people who could have Covid-19, or other infectious diseases we have a standard policy for protective measures including use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Any people we encounter like this will be cared for in a specific area with meticulous attention to process. Members of the public will be advised if there is any situation where special precautions are necessary.”

“For other situations, our principles are the same as they would be normally. We aim to maintain physical distance and good hand hygiene.  There are hand sanitiser stations located around the hospitals, which you are welcome to use.

“Masks are available for use when staff feel that they are unable to maintain physical distancing for prolonged periods. We also have a QR code logging system for all of areas so that staff can track their movement between areas of the hospital. We ask visitors to please remember to scan in with your QR app – most clinical areas will also have a book or log sheet for this if you don’t have a smart phone.”

It is important that people who are unwell do not visit others in hospital.

“A reminder to everyone living or visiting the Southern district – if you have cold or flu symptoms you should get tested.  COVID testing is free and available seven days a week.  Call your GP or 0800VIRUS19 to be referred for a test.  You do not need to self-isolate after a test, but you should stay home until you are symptom-free.

Dr Millar also had a message for those people currently in Southern on temporary visas.

“COVID testing is free regardless of citizenship, immigration or visa status.  Information will not be shared for immigration related or other enforcement purposes.  You don’t need to be enrolled with a doctor or general practice to be tested.  You do need to provide contact details – usually a phone number – so you can be informed of your test results.

“Thank you for playing your part as part of the team of 5 million. Kia Kaha.”
