Need urgent medical care in Queenstown? Emergency Department not the only option

Patients are being urged to consider the other treatment options available in Queenstown, as the Lakes District Hospital Emergency Department experiences its busiest year ever.

Emergency Department presentations at Lakes District Hospital are up 25% on last year.

The usual skiing and snowboarding soft tissue injuries and fractures continue to place pressure on the department, however, there has also been a significant rise in less serious medical presentations.

“Some of the coughs, colds, and minor fractures we’ve been seeing could have been treated by a GP.” says Operations Manager, Janeen Holmes.

This significant increase in volume can result in longer wait times and place tremendous stress on resources in the Emergency Department.

Wakatipu Medical Centre in Frankton accept walk-ins, and Mountain Lakes Medical in Queenstown is a nearby option.

The Queenstown Medical Centre, which has an Accident and Medical Clinic, is also well placed for visitors presenting less serious medical issues to get the care they need.

“Our walk in clinic is open every day (8am-8pm weekdays, 9am-8pm weekends) and ready to provide accident and urgent medical care for all visitors, and those not currently registered with us. After giving your details you will be triaged by one of our experienced nurses, then see one of our skilled GPs.” says Dr Richard Macharg, Chief Executive of Queenstown Medical Centre.

“X-rays are available in office hours and blood tests can be taken. We pride ourselves on providing the best care so you can be back out, feeling better, as soon as possible.”
