Christmas came early for Southland children today when a cheque for $40,000 was presented to Southern DHB at Countdown in Invercargill.

The cheque presentation was attended by Countdown and Southern DHB staff, together with this years’ Southland child ambassador for the appeal, Jhordaya Shaw.

“We’re so grateful to receive the donation from Countdown and can’t thank enough their staff, local customers and everyone else who made this year’s appeal so successful,” says Southern DHB Clinical Nurse Manager Paediatrics, Marie Irvine.

“Being able to purchase the items on our wish list really makes a difference to children in our hospital. They really help to make the stay of children and their families and whanau more comfortable.”

The money raised will be used towards the purchase of items for the children’s services. Items on this year’s wish list include sensory equipment for the Children’s Ward; wheelchairs for children in the community; observation equipment for the Emergency Department, and a non-invasive bilirubin monitor for maternity.

The Appeal is Countdown’s annual national fundraising activity to raise money to support the purchase of additional equipment for 21 children’s hospitals and wards across New Zealand.  Hundreds of fundraising events, organised by Countdown team members, suppliers and district health boards, were held over three months between August and October. Locally, these included selling raffle ticket, cheese roll sales and a quiz night

Celebrating its 12th anniversary, the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal has raised $763,829 for Southland since it began through country-wide fundraising activities.

The Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal ran from 6 August until 28 October 2018. For more information on the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal, visit: www.countdown.co.nz/countdownkids
