Upper Clutha Hospice Trust

On this page

The Upper Clutha Hospice Trust Board (UCHT) is a community group formed by a group of Wanaka residents to develop a palliative and respite care facility in the Upper Clutha for the benefit of those suffering from terminal illnesses. The UCHT also provides some support for those with terminal illnesses in the Upper Clutha, who wish to remain in their own homes rather than be admitted to a palliative care facility.

The Trust’s concept is to provide facilities and support for the terminally ill that is not provided by other parties in the Upper Clutha. The Trust works alongside other service providers such as the Otago Community Hospice, the Cancer Society, Aged Care providers etc to augment what is available to Upper Clutha residents.

On September 30, 2016, the UCHT opened its Stina Mooyman Palliative & Respite Care Suite in the Aspiring Enliven Care Centre on Cardrona Valley Road in Wanaka, adjacent to the Wanaka Medical Centre.

In mid 2019, the Trust commenced funding Dunstan Hospital to provide an additional Wanaka based District Nurse specialising in palliative care services for patients with terminal illnesses living in their own homes in the Upper Clutha community.

The Trust also provides annual funding to assist the Otago Community Hospice provide services to patients in the Upper Clutha community.

The UCHT is a registered charity with the Charities Commission number CC49439

The UCHT is an independent Upper Clutha organisation and all funds raised are used to the benefit of the Upper Clutha community. Although it works with the Otago Community Hospice (OCH) to support terminally ill patients in the Upper Clutha, the UCHT is not part of the OCH and is not affiliated with Hospice NZ.

THE STINA MOOYMAN PALLIATIVE & RESPITE CARE SUITE
The Stina Mooyman Palliative & Respite Care Suite is owned and supported by the UCHT on behalf of the Upper Clutha Community. It is available for use by those who need palliative care in the Upper Clutha region, subject to funding arrangements and occupancy.

The Suite is located within the Aspiring Enliven Care Centre on Cardrona Valley Road, Wanaka, adjacent to the Wanaka Medical Centre. It is operated and serviced day-to-day by Presbyterian Support Otago, who are the operators of the Aspiring Enliven facility.

    The Suite currently comprises:

    • One patient room with en-suite bathroom, and with a small patio outside the bedroom.
    • A family room connected to the patient bedroom, with a small kitchen/eating area, a sitting area and a patio outside the sitting area. The kitchen is intended for heating up precooked food only
    • Both the patient room and the family room have TVs and telephones, and the patient room is connected into the Aspiring Enliven call and monitoring systems.

The patient room is equipped with a Roho dri-floatation mattress overlay for patients’ comfort, and with pain and suction pumps to support patients.

The Suite is designed for patients’ families to be able to stay overnight to be with the patient, and families are welcome to use this facility. The Suite contains recliner chairs and a sofa that converts to a double bed. Linens and bedding are provided.

A second patient room connects to the family room, and although not a part of the Suite at this stage, it is likely to be available to the UCHT if patient demand requires more than one bedroom in the Suite. It is the UCHT’s intention to acquire the second patient bedroom when demand justifies this further investment in the Suite.

Funding support for special needs including additional palliative nursing care and assistance with GP fees when Government support has been exhausted, all on a case-by-case need basis.
