Paediatrics - Southland | Southern
Description
The Paediatric Department in Southland consists of a 13 bed Paediatric Ward, a 10 bed level 2 Neonatal Unit, 4 bed PAAU (paediatric acute assessment unit) and 4 room outpatient clinic area.
We accept referrals from GPs, the emergency department and self-referrals for some children with higher medical needs. We accept referrals on children up to their 16th birthday.
We run regular outpatient clinics and have visiting specialists from tertiary hospitals run clinics for the following services: cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, respiratory, endocrine, rheumatology and immunology, general surgery and urology.
We provide medical support for high risk deliveries and provide ongoing care for babies born above 32 weeks gestation. Babies born earlier than 32 weeks will be transferred to a level 3 unit (normally Dunedin) before delivery when possible or following stabilisation once born.
We have 5 paediatric consultants and 8 junior doctors. There is always a paediatric doctor on site at all times.
We provide teaching to both 5th and 6th year trainee doctors who form an important part of the healthcare team.
We have a number of highly skilled senior nurses who provide support, advice and education for a number of common paediatric conditions including for example: type 1 diabetes, asthma and eczema.
We provide an outpatient nursing service for children who require regular iv medications and also offer food challenges to children with food allergies.
We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, open, effective and functional unit and are always striving to provide the best level of care to the wonderful children of Southland.
Paediatric Surgery
This is a South Island-wide service which is known as the South Island Childhood Network Paediatric Surgery.
The referral and transport guidelines aim to ensure that children's surgery and care is undertaken as close to home as possible, and that support, advice, and assistance is provided to the Child Health Services of provincial hospitals.
Christchurch Paediatric Surgical Centre serves the whole South Island, with the exception of Nelson / Marlborough neonates who are transferred to Wellington for initial care, with subsequent care provided by the Christchurch service.
Christchurch paediatric surgeons provide:
- clinics and day surgery sessions at Blenheim, Nelson, Greymouth, Timaru, Dunedin, and Invercargill public hospitals, on a regular basis according to each centre's needs.
- 24 hour telephone advice to general surgeons and paediatricians in paediatric surgical emergencies (each centre is encouraged to have at least one surgeon who can take primary responsibility in these cases).
- up-skill courses for general surgeons in the management of paediatric surgery.
