 Locations

Base hospitals are in Dunedin (Tertiary) and Invercargill (Secondary).

Queen Mary maternity is a tertiary maternity unit that supports 1,750 births per year at Dunedin Hospital in Ōtepoti. Queen Mary maternity provides additional maternity care for more complex clinical needs and births under 32 weeks of pregnancy.

Invercargill/ Waihōpai, is a secondary maternity unit supporting 1,200 births per year (births over 32 weeks of pregnancy).

Both Queen Mary Maternity and Southland Hospital are accredited ‘Baby friendly hospitals’ and have employed Lactation Consultants.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora - Southern units are in Queenstown, Alexandra, and Wanaka (opening 2024) and they provide safe antenatal, postnatal and breastfeeding care and birthing options for people who are having a healthy pregnancy with no current complications, to receive care in their own community.

The Midwife First year of Practice (MFYP) programme

Southern programme supports the national MFYP programme, so all mandatory training will be rostered and funded within the position (plus NZCOM membership, practicing certificates and Southern education).

Due to registration being at different times throughout the year, the programme is individualised and can be commenced at flexible dates, and you will have the options of applying for an FTE 0.6-0.8 position.

Thank you for considering joining our Southern midwifery team. We are keen to foster your development and to nurture you as a newly graduated midwife, grateful of the skills and knowledge you will bring to our midwifery whānau.
