Midwives returning to Practice

Welcome back to midwifery! We are so happy that you are considering returning to this wonderful profession and support our community.

At Southern, we understand that midwives may have different reasons for taking a break, such as family, travel, or exploring other careers. We value your interest in knowing more about what is happening in the midwifery space here in Southern and exploring the opportunity to re-join the midwifery whānau.

The Midwifery Council of New Zealand will assess your ‘fitness to practice’ and tell you what education you need to complete based on how long you have been away from practice.

You can learn more about the Midwifery Council’s rules here: Returning to Practise (midwiferycouncil.health.nz)

Once you have a personal plan from the Midwifery Council, we will support you with your journey back to the midwifery workforce. Our team of midwife educators and clinical coaches are experienced and friendly. They will help you with formal assessments and build your clinical confidence.
